Pixels to Inches
One calculator for every direction: px to inches, inches to px, image dimensions to print size, and the real PPI of any screen — with live print-quality checks and a to-scale preview.

inches = pixels ÷ PPI Pixels and inches, explained
A pixel is a unit of information, not a unit of length. An inch is physical and fixed. The bridge between the two is pixel density — how many pixels to the inch a screen shows, or a printer lays down — written as PPI (pixels per inch) or DPI (dots per inch).
That is why px to inches has no single answer on its own. At the CSS standard of 96 PPI an inch holds 96 pixels. At the 300 DPI print standard the same inch holds 300. A modern phone packs more than 400 into it, and a roadside billboard fewer than 30.
Fix the density and pixel sizes in inches become exact arithmetic that works in both directions. Photographers sizing a print, designers checking a layout, and anyone matching artwork to a frame all rely on this one relationship between pixels and inches.
PPI and DPI are used interchangeably on this page, as they are in most conversion work; where the distinction genuinely matters is set out in DPI vs PPI.
How Pixels to Inches works
Set your DPI / PPI
Use 96 for on-screen CSS work, 300 for photo printing, or tap a preset. The screen PPI finder measures a display from its resolution and diagonal.
Enter your pixels
One value, or a full width × height for an image. Standard resolutions and paper sizes are one dropdown away.
Read the result
Pixel sizes in inches appear immediately, with centimetres, millimetres, points and picas beside them, plus a print-quality verdict and a to-scale preview.
A worked example: A US Letter page is 8.5 inches wide. Scan or export it at 2550 pixels across and the density is 2550 ÷ 8.5 = 300 PPI — exactly print resolution. Halve the pixels to 1275 and you are at 150 PPI, fine for a poster but soft in the hand.
Pixels to inches formula
Four lines cover every conversion on this page.
Worked with the values in the calculator above
inches = 1,920 px ÷ 96 PPI = 20 in
pixels = 20 in × 96 PPI = 1,920 px
cm = 20 in × 2.54 = 50.8 cm
mm = 20 in × 25.4 = 508 mm At the CSS standard of 96 PPI, 1 inch = 96 px and 1 px = 0.0104166667 in. At the 300 DPI print standard, 1 inch = 300 px and 1 px = 0.0033333 in. PPI and DPI are interchangeable here: when a print shop asks for 300 DPI artwork, they mean 300 pixels per inch at the final print size.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the pixels by the pixel density: inches = pixels ÷ PPI. For example, 600 px at 300 PPI is 2 inches.
How many pixels are in 1 inch?
It depends on the resolution. At 96 PPI one inch is 96 pixels, at 300 DPI it is 300 pixels, and at 72 PPI it is 72 pixels.
What size will my 1920 × 1080 image print?
6.4 × 3.6 inches at 300 DPI, 12.8 × 7.2 inches at 150 DPI, and 20 × 11.25 inches on a 96 PPI screen.
Is 72 DPI good enough for printing?
No. 72 DPI is a screen convention and prints visibly soft. Use 300 DPI for photos and 150 DPI for large posters.
What is my screen's real PPI?
PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal. A 27-inch 2560 × 1440 monitor is about 109 PPI; the Screen PPI finder does the maths for you.
How many inches is one pixel?
Divide 1 by the pixel density. At 96 PPI one pixel is 0.0104166667 inches (about 0.26 mm), at 300 DPI it is 0.0033333 inches, and at 72 PPI it is 0.0138888889 inches. On a 460 PPI phone screen a pixel is only 0.0021739 inches across.
What does px size mean?
px is the abbreviation for pixel, so a px size is a measurement in picture elements rather than in physical units. A 1080 px wide image is 1080 pixels across; how many inches that becomes depends entirely on the PPI you display or print it at.
What is px in inches?
One px equals 1 ÷ PPI inches. At the 96 PPI CSS standard that is 0.0104166667 in, and at the 300 DPI print standard it is 0.0033333 in. Enter any px value in the converter above and the answer appears in inches, centimetres, millimetres, points and picas at once.
How do I calculate the size of a picture?
Divide each pixel dimension by the density you plan to use. A 3000 × 2000 px photo at 300 DPI prints 10 × 6.67 inches; at 150 DPI it doubles to 20 × 13.33 inches. The Image & print size tab converts both dimensions at once and reports the aspect ratio, megapixels and a print-quality verdict.
How big is 100px?
100 px measures 1.0417 inches (2.65 cm) at 96 PPI, 0.6667 inches (1.69 cm) at 150 DPI and 0.3333 inches (0.85 cm) at 300 DPI. On a 460 PPI phone display the same 100 px is just 0.2174 inches wide.
How do I count the pixels in an image?
Open the file properties, or any image editor, and read the width × height in pixels — those two numbers are the pixel counts per side. Multiply them for the total: 3000 × 2000 gives 6,000,000 pixels, or 6 megapixels.
Pixels vs inches — what is the difference?
Pixels count picture elements; inches measure physical length. A pixel has no fixed physical size, so pixels and inches only line up once a pixel density is fixed. That is why every honest conversion asks for a PPI or DPI value first.
What is a pixel?
A pixel — short for picture element — is the smallest addressable dot in a digital image or on a display. It carries a colour value but no inherent physical size, which is why one pixel can be an invisible speck on a phone and a hand-sized square on a billboard.
How many pixels is 8.5 x 11 inches?
A US Letter page is 2550 × 3300 pixels at 300 DPI, 1275 × 1650 pixels at 150 DPI and 816 × 1056 pixels at the 96 PPI screen standard. Multiply each side in inches by the density you need.
